Is Your Business Code A Secret?
It has landed and it is spreading like a virus, OMG! It’s replacing faces on Facebook!
It’s showing up on newsletters, packaging boxes and promotional ads………it’s almost everywhere!
With this going viral and names like ‘RedLaser’, ‘Roundup’, ‘Sharesquare’…. is it time to make hats out of Aluminum foil to protect ourselves from Alien invasion?
Nothing quite so sinister………….Just the latest hot gadget for those innovative advertisers to morph themselves into a “Square-2-share” and “Round-U-up”with “red-hot-laser” speed and efficiency. The Goal? Get their link or contact info in your smart phone and a little closer to your wallet!
It’s the QR Code!
But what is it, exactly? What does it do? And more importantly, how can it benefit your business?
What is a QR Code?
A QR (Quick Response) code is essentially a barcode with spots instead of the traditional bars. By scanning the codes, you can access images, websites and text. By creating the codes and producing your own messages you can connect to your Mobile web presence to the offline world.
When scanned with a smartphone, it causes the phone to load data. If the data is a URL, that web page opens on the phone. It looks like this:
It’s usually just as simple as taking a picture!
This is the data it can deliver:
- URLs: It opens the webpage on your phone
- SMS: Sends a message through text messaging. This feature is not as commonly used because many people don’t have an SMS package and will be charged for it)
- TEXT: just a plain short message that appears in your phone.
- CONTACT INFORMATION: The contact info is delivered straight to the contacts file in your smart phone, allowing you to save it, with all the info in the correct fields. If you’d like to have our contact info in your phone, please scan here:
In order to scan it, you’ll need an qr-reading app in your smartphone.
WhereTo Get The Scanner App:
Android: Barcode Scanner
Palm: QR deCODEr
Or search for it in your app world or market.
Ok great, so now we know how it works but, what can it do for my business?
What a QR Code can do for your business:
Let’s say your business comes up when you are out shopping or you are in a meeting and you have everyone’s card but your own in your pocket, someone wants a look at your website or to swap contact info. If your website is so long (like ours) it won’t fit on a restaurant napkin or you don’t have the time…. what do you do?
You whip out your QR code from your wallet or your own phone and let them scan it, and Zap….. they are on your website and have your contact info!
If we were talking to somebody about our social media services, we would have them scan this:
If you own a brick and mortar business, for example, a restaurant. You could have a sign that says “Find us in Facebook”, hoping your customers will remember to do that when they get home and actually find our page …..
… rather than take a chance on that, simply put your qr code where your customers can easily scan it, place mat, menu or table tent and while they are waiting, you will be adding FB fans, right then and there!
And last but not least, you are a network marketer building your list, and somebody is interested in receiving more information by signing up for your newsletter. They can scan the qr code which will direct them to your opt-in form, just like the one you have in your blog! They would fill it out, submit it and your autoresponder would start sending them your messages right away. Isn’t it fantastic?
How to generate your qr code
We have used this free tool to generate the qr codes you see on this page. (Our Lead generation Members Club offers this free-to-use qr code generator)
You’ll have to decide what webpage you’ll send people who scan the qr code.
If you want to use it for your opt-in form with Aweber (don’t know if other autoresponders have that feature), then these are the steps:
- Either create a new webform or click on the name of one you’re currently using.
- Once open, go to the “Publish” tab and click on “have Aweber host my form”
- Copy and paste the link there to the qr code generator
- And you’re done!
Once you have your qr code, the uses are many! We recommend though, to use it offline mostly. Why? While you can share your code as an image on the web, on a computer, it’s easier to just click a link than to scan the image with a phone.
So you’re better off printing your code and keeping it on hand for cases like those conversations mentioned above.
Want some ideas on where to print them?
- buttons
- stickers
- pins
- temporary tattoos
- postcards
- business cards
- mugs
- keychains
- magnets
- tote bags
- mouse pads
- notepads
- and many many more!
Is QR code marketing the next overstated solution to endless leads and rivers of revenue or the perfect shortcut to connect all the offline/online marketing ‘dots’? As with all marketing ….test, test and analyze the results.

I love QR codes – they are a great way to put a message, link or simply a call to action on a piece of artwork. I’ve even got one printed on my business card and it definitely gets people talking. With a smartphone they can scan the card and get a link to my website for more information. So much easier then collecting business cards and putting them in a drawer never to be looked at again.

I’m hailing from the Dark Ages, in that I don’t have any kind of cell phone. Never have had one. But it helps a lot to know what those little symbols stand for!! I’ve been seeing them around lately and my curiosity was getting the better of me.
Thanks much for the explanation!

Hi Tim and Sole, that code sounds really good for any business! I must say I’m a bit like Willena, although I have owned a mobile phone (that’s what we call them in Australia). I took one on a trip to Europe about 10 years ago, and was soooo thankful for it. SMS messages to my family on the other side of the world meant a lot to me!
However, I can’t be bothered pressing all those little keys anymore to write messages, so I cheat and use skype for SMS. I also use skype when I go away, along with my mini notebook (it has a proper keyboard:-).

I (Sole) didn’t own a mobile phone until I moved to the US about 6 years ago… and only started using a smart phone (which is more a computer than a phone) 4 months ago. And I must reckon I’m addicted to all the things I can do with it… though the keyboard is too small for me, too!
Thanks for your comment!

It really amazing how fast QR codes have spread in this country. Only a year ago, someone showed me my first QR code, and I asked them why they would want a barcode on their business card. Now I know the answer to this age old question.
Hello!
Thanks for demystifying QR codes for me. These remind me of the ability to ‘beam’ contacts and other information back and forth with Palm Pilots. Am I showing my age? QR codes are obviously more advanced and you gave us some great, practical business uses for them. I can’t wait to generate a couple codes and try them out. This is valuable info! Allegra

Thanks for explaining so clearly what QR codes are. I came across that word a few days back but didn’t know what it was or what it was for. Either I’m in the dark ages or people here where I live haven’t caught on to the idea yet. Anyway, I don’t have a fancy shmancy phone that can scan QR codes. My mobile phone is purely for me to make emergency calls
Anyway, I can see how this is going to be a big thing worldwide.

Hi Lian,
Thanks for stopping by!
You might be surprised, but actually Japan was one of the first countries (if not the first) to use the QR code. It’s actually still pretty new to the US… many people are still discovering what the codes are for!
The good thing is that you don’t need a “fancy” phone to create one. It will for sure grab’s people’s attention in your country if they haven’t seen much of it yet. And as you said, it will be a big thing worldwide, even if it takes its time.
Thanks for your comment and sincerity!

Hi Tim and Sole,
Great explanation on QR codes. They are definitely becoming prolific these days and understanding what they are and how they might benefit online entrepreneurs / businesses is important.
On a simpler level I like them because instead of having to manually input a new contact into an iphone, we can take a photo of 2D barcodes and it will automatically add the new contact. Much easier! My husband and I also use it sometimes when shopping in town. Want more info? The barcode will direct you to the website.
Cool stuff!

While not feasible for many of the things we now enjoy QR codes for, it’s worth paying attention to the fact that Google is now using NFC chips in several places to replace QR codes. Here is just one example: http://www.businessinsider.com/those-little-square-codes-you-scan-with-your-phone-are-dead-2011-3
One suggestion I make to many that are setting up QR destinations for printed media is to first set up a url redirect from a domain name you OWN so that in a year, if the destination url is no longer valid, you can change it without disrupting the QR code that is in circulation. This is a mistake that many make and can result in having a QR code on your business card that doesn’t point to anything useful!

I’ve been hearing a lot about QR codes but i never really understand them. All i know was that it works like a bar code. However, i was wrong. I guess it’s one way to promote your business and reach out to your customers. I would definitely look into this. Sounds like a good business marketing strategy.
Great article! I actually went to a conference this past summer and printed up business cards with my personal QR code on them – they really impressed. Not sure how much longevity they have, but at the moment they are everywhere!
